NFL Picks Today: 3 Preseason Matchups to Watch Friday, August 21

Published August 21, 2026 • Advanced Sports Advisors

Friday's NFL preseason board features three matchups worth monitoring: Jets vs. Steelers, Panthers vs. Jaguars and Packers vs. Broncos. In preseason football, the biggest edge often comes from understanding who is expected to play, how long key units may stay on the field and which roster battles can influence the second half.

BETTING NOTE: Preseason information can change quickly. Quarterback rotations, starter availability, injuries and coaching decisions should be rechecked close to kickoff. The analysis below is informational and does not reveal ASA's protected premium selections.

Friday's NFL Preseason Board

NFL preseason handicapping requires a different approach than the regular season. The team with the stronger projected starting lineup does not automatically have the stronger preseason setup because starters may play only briefly — or not at all.

Playing-time plans, quarterback rotations, offensive-line depth, roster competition and coaching priorities can become more important than regular-season power ratings. Bettors following Friday's board should therefore treat late information as part of the handicapping process rather than locking in an opinion based only on team names.

ASA's permanent NFL picks page covers the current football board, while this breakdown focuses specifically on three Friday preseason matchups and the variables worth tracking before kickoff.

NFL Preseason • Week 2
New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Friday, Aug. 21 7:00 PM ET Acrisure Stadium Pittsburgh, PA

Jets-Steelers carries several of the variables that make preseason football difficult to price too early. Pittsburgh opened its preseason with a 28-9 victory over Green Bay, while its younger quarterbacks received meaningful opportunities behind the veteran depth at the position.

Rookie Drew Allar was one of Pittsburgh's notable performers in that opener, completing 10 of 13 passes while accounting for three touchdowns — two through the air and one rushing. That makes Pittsburgh's quarterback distribution worth watching closely again Friday.

The Jets have their own playing-time question. Geno Smith was held out of New York's preseason opener after dealing with a sore ankle, but he returned to practice. Head coach Aaron Glenn has indicated that live preseason work can be valuable when players are healthy enough to receive it.

Late Availability Matters

Jets running back Breece Hall left Monday's practice with a groin issue. Aaron Glenn indicated the initial belief was that the injury was not serious, but Hall's status is another reason bettors should verify personnel information before treating an early preseason opinion as final.

Jets QB Usage Whether Geno Smith receives live work — and how much — can change the early-game evaluation.
Steelers QB Rotation Pittsburgh's distribution of snaps behind Aaron Rodgers remains important after Drew Allar's productive opener.
Health Updates Preseason personnel decisions can change quickly, making Friday's final availability reports important.
Second-Half Depth Once established starters leave, roster depth can have an outsized effect on the final two quarters.
What Matters Before Kickoff
Confirm the Jets' quarterback plan, monitor Breece Hall's status and check how Pittsburgh intends to divide quarterback reps. In preseason football, those decisions can matter more than a normal regular-season comparison between the two starting units.
NFL Preseason • Week 2
Carolina Panthers vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
Friday, Aug. 21 7:30 PM ET EverBank Stadium Jacksonville, FL

Panthers-Jaguars deserves attention because Jacksonville has provided useful information about its approach to the week. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said Monday that the team was likely to play starters Friday as Jacksonville continues preparing for the regular season.

That does not automatically create a betting side. It does, however, give bettors an important piece of the preseason puzzle. The number of drives played by starters, which starters are actually active and how quickly Jacksonville transitions into its reserve units still matter.

Jacksonville enters the matchup after a 24-20 preseason-opening victory at New Orleans. The Jaguars also scheduled joint work with Carolina during training camp, creating another layer to the preparation week before Friday night's game.

Jacksonville Starters Liam Coen's indication that starters are likely to play makes their expected workload a key pregame variable.
Joint-Practice Context Controlled practice work can influence how coaches choose to distribute game snaps afterward.
Quarterback Rotation Confirm the order and expected workload rather than assuming a normal regular-season quarterback distribution.
Reserve Competition Roster battles become increasingly important once the primary units leave the field.
What Matters Before Kickoff
Jacksonville's expected starter usage is the headline, but the actual workload matters more than the word “starters.” Confirm which players are active, expected series counts when available and the quarterback plan for both teams.
NFL Preseason • Week 2
Green Bay Packers vs. Denver Broncos
Friday, Aug. 21 Preseason Week 2 Empower Field at Mile High Denver, CO

Green Bay travels to Denver for its second preseason contest after dropping its opener 28-9 against Pittsburgh. Friday will be the 12th preseason meeting between the Packers and Broncos and the fourth consecutive preseason meeting between the clubs played in Denver.

The opener provides context, but preseason results should not automatically be projected into the following week. Personnel usage can change substantially from one exhibition game to the next, especially as coaches move closer to final roster decisions.

Green Bay and Denver therefore require another fresh evaluation: quarterback workloads, which veterans dress, offensive-line combinations and how long the primary units remain on the field can all change the matchup once final plans become clearer.

Green Bay Response The Packers' opening loss provides information about depth, but Friday's personnel plan must be evaluated independently.
Denver Usage Confirm which established players Denver intends to use and how the quarterback workload will be divided.
Line Play Reserve offensive-line combinations can become especially important after the starting units leave.
Roster Evaluation Week 2 creates meaningful opportunities for players competing for depth-chart and roster positions.
What Matters Before Kickoff
Do not handicap this matchup solely from Green Bay's Week 1 result. Recheck both teams' playing-time plans and quarterback rotations because a different personnel distribution can create a substantially different preseason game.

Why Preseason NFL Betting Requires More Patience

Regular-season NFL analysis can lean heavily on established quarterback play, efficiency, injuries, matchup strengths, key numbers and situational factors. Preseason football adds another major variable: uncertainty about who will actually be on the field.

A strong starting unit has limited value to the final score if it plays only one or two series. Conversely, a team with stronger quarterback depth or more productive reserve units can become much more relevant once the game reaches the second half.

That is why ASA emphasizes information flow and entry quality rather than forcing action simply because games are available. Starter announcements, quarterback rotations and late scratches can all change the context of a preseason matchup.

Preseason Rule to Remember

A matchup opinion formed early in the week should be reconsidered when meaningful playing-time information changes. The goal is not to be first to a conclusion. The goal is to make the decision using the best available information.
