College Football Picks Today: 5 Friday Matchups – September 25, 2026
Friday's ASA college football board stretches from the afternoon into late night with five matchups: Army at Temple, Howard at Rutgers, Navy at UAB, Northwestern at No. 5 Indiana and Clemson at California.
Five Friday College Football Matchups
Army Black Knights at Temple Owls
Army at Temple
Friday's board begins in Philadelphia with Army visiting Temple in an American Conference matchup.
Temple enters at 1-2 after one of the most dramatic games of its young season, a 49-48 overtime loss at Toledo. Quarterback Evan Sheppard threw for 164 yards and three touchdowns in the loss, giving the Owls offensive production to build on despite the result.
Army presents a completely different preparation challenge. Facing the Black Knights requires assignment discipline, patience and the ability to stay structurally sound against an offense designed to punish defensive mistakes.
Tempo and possessions matter. Army can create a different game environment than Temple experienced at Toledo. Bettors should evaluate whether the posted spread and total properly account for a potentially compressed possession count.
Howard Bison at Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Howard at Rutgers
Rutgers returns home Friday night still searching for its first victory of 2026. The Scarlet Knights enter 0-3 after opening the season with three losses, while Howard arrives at 1-2.
Howard has already experienced a major Big Ten road environment this season, traveling to Bloomington to face Indiana on September 12. That experience does not eliminate the talent difference Friday, but it does mean the Bison have already prepared for this type of road setting.
For Rutgers, the challenge is converting an expected personnel advantage into four quarters of clean football rather than allowing its winless start to create unnecessary pressure.
If Rutgers is laying a substantial number, evaluate pace, offensive efficiency and second-half game script. A significant talent advantage does not automatically make a large favorite a strong ATS position.
Navy Midshipmen at UAB Blazers
Navy at UAB
Navy heads to Birmingham for its second American Conference road game of the season after splitting its first two contests.
The Midshipmen opened with a 42-15 victory over Towson before falling 38-30 at Florida Atlantic. Friday sends Navy back on the road for another conference matchup, this time against UAB at Protective Stadium.
As with Army, Navy's offensive structure makes discipline and possession efficiency central to the handicap. Opponents can have fewer opportunities to recover from empty drives when the Midshipmen control the ball and shorten the game.
Third-down defense, explosive-play prevention and UAB's ability to stay ahead of schedule are important. Falling behind Navy can force an opponent away from its preferred offensive plan while allowing the Midshipmen to control tempo.
Northwestern Wildcats at No. 5 Indiana Hoosiers
Northwestern at No. 5 Indiana
No. 5 Indiana opens Big Ten play Friday night after finishing its nonconference schedule with a dominant 38-0 victory over Western Kentucky.
The Hoosiers' defense enters conference play with momentum after producing the shutout, while Indiana now transitions from its nonconference schedule into the weekly demands of Big Ten competition.
For Northwestern, the challenge is dealing with Indiana's ability to create pressure without allowing negative plays to repeatedly put the offense behind schedule. For bettors, the bigger question may be the price attached to a top-five team playing at home on national television.
Do not handicap the ranking. Handicap the number. Indiana can be substantially better than Northwestern without automatically representing value at every point spread. The Wildcats' ability to avoid turnovers and keep possessions alive becomes central if they're receiving a large number.
Clemson Tigers at California Golden Bears
Clemson at California
Friday's board closes in Berkeley with one of the most interesting games of the night. Clemson and California both enter 2-1 overall and 1-0 in ACC play.
Cal is coming off a 52-7 victory over Wagner and now faces a significant increase in competition. Clemson also arrives at 2-1, making this a conference matchup where both programs have already secured their first ACC victory.
The setting adds another handicapping variable. Clemson travels across the country for a 10:30 p.m. Eastern kickoff, while California plays under the lights at home.
Travel deserves consideration without turning it into an automatic betting angle. Focus on line-of-scrimmage play, quarterback efficiency, explosive plays and whether the market has already priced Clemson's travel disadvantage into the number.
Five Games — Five Different Betting Environments
Possession Football
Army and Navy can change the number of possessions in a game. That makes offensive efficiency and third downs especially important.
Large Favorites
Rutgers-Howard and potentially Northwestern-Indiana require bettors to separate the likely winner from the value of the point spread.
Conference Familiarity
Army-Temple, Navy-UAB, Northwestern-Indiana and Clemson-Cal all carry conference implications, making current roster and matchup information more important than reputation alone.
Travel & Scheduling
Clemson's trip to Berkeley and Friday's unusual kickoff windows matter, but those factors only create value when the market has not already priced them correctly.
Re-check Thursday and Friday injury information, quarterback availability, weather and current betting numbers before finalizing the card. Friday's standalone games can attract concentrated betting activity, making line movement especially important as kickoff approaches.
Five Friday Games — Only Qualified Value Makes the Card
Friday offers service-academy football, a ranked Big Ten favorite, an FBS-FCS matchup and a late-night ACC game. ASA premium selections are reserved for situations where the matchup, current information and available number create enough value to qualify.
